How to Get Dad on Board for a Family Photo-session...

First off, let me start by clarifying, I am not a big fan of generalizations and I’m certainly not saying that all dads dread photo sessions. I know quite a few moms who are just as reluctant to step in front of the camera as well. And, I also know just as many parents who love having their photograph taken and enjoy the process.

However, I've observed that if there's a family member who's often less enthusiastic about photo sessions, it's frequently dad. With that in mind, I've put together a short list of suggestions to help get dad on board, aiming for an enjoyable family session for everyone involved.

TIP 1: DON’T SCHEDULE DURING AN IMPORTANT EVENT

If your husband is into sports, scheduling on game-day is probably not going to make him any more exited for family pictures. Make sure that your session date doesn’t conflict with something he’d much rather be doing

TIP 2: REMIND HIM THAT THE SESSION IS ONLY AN HOUR (or less!)

…and then it will all be over. Knowing that the family session will not be drug out an excessively long time always helps dads to get on board. Also, knowing that am the type of family photographer that takes on managing the kids will take the stress off of him (and mom!) to expect perfectly behaved children.

TIP 3: TELL HIM HE’LL GET SEVERAL BREAKS!

…He will not be in front of the camera the entire session and will get breaks when we are photographing the kiddos or mom and the kiddos together.

TIP 4: MAKE SURE HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT MY STYLE IS LIKE

Some Dads just hate the thought of not knowing what to do - and can you blame ‘em?! This is usually the #1 reason dads dread family sessions.

It’s those awkward moments that nobody likes, of not know what to do or where to put themselves in an uncomfortable situation.  I know that most Dads like to feel useful and what’s more awkward than the thought of being at a photo-shoot and being made to stand still and pose for a total stranger! It’s awkward and a little intimidating, I’m sure.

But here’s the deal…I’m not that family photographer that’s going to make you feel awkward…

I’m that photographer who:

1. Doesn’t care for cheesy, posed photos and also gives full and complete direction on what I want you to do

2. Executes everything with a little bit of sarcasm and possibly some borderline inappropriate humor (if the kiddos are out of earshot!)

Sessions are easy and laid back…no awkwardness in sight. - You might even find yourself having a good time.

The ultimate compliment for me is when dads tell me at the end of the session that it was “so much better than they thought it was going to be” or moms tell me that their husbands had a great time and are actually looking forward to their next family session. Winning!
